Review: Chonas, Great India Place, NOIDA

[Rating:2/5]

Chonas has set up shop in the Great India Place, NOIDA and opened it’s doors to diners recently. We went there in the middle of some birthday shopping on Saturday (yeah, my birthday). It’s an unpretentious place with severely uncomfortable chairs, friendly staff and slightly steep prices compared to the food they serve.

Being in a hurry and unwilling to spend time on the menu, we ordered Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian Thalis. For those who don’t know what a Thali is – it is a large platter with a sampling of anywhere between 3 – 12 little bowls in it, which contain different dishes. Typically, there will be rotis, rice, dry and gravy dishes and one sweet dish – all accompanied by some papad (poppadoms), pickles and a small salad perhaps. Usually great value for money and quite difficult to go wrong with it is a favorites with the cost and value conscious Indian diner.

My platter contained:

  • Dal Tadka – a mixture of two dals – a little below par.
  • Chicken Curry – nice, but normal
  • Chicken kebab – good
  • Mixed vegetables – bland, way below par
  • Curd – sour, quite bad
  • Vermicelli Kheer – ok
  • Rotis – Good
  • Rice – Ok

Though it wasn’t expensive at INR 200, the value it delivered was quite low and we probably wont be going there again. They’ve done up the place with some designer motifs and the furniture was probably quite expensive, however, they need to pay a little attention to what’s happening in the kitchens.
